Is The Public Option In Or Out?

Well, at long last, the Senate Finance Committee has finally reported out a bill, but one without a public option. Now Senators Reed, Dodd, Harkin and Baucus and the White House are meeting to produce a bill that will be debated by the full Senate. Will it contain a public option? If so, will it pass? Will a Republican filabuster be successful? What do you think?

  1. I have a lot of confidence in Harkin to fight for the public option; however, Dodd is a question mark, Baucus is bought by health insurance companies, Reed is a wimp and the White House, who knows? The best hope for a public option is with Peloci. I think she can do it.

  2. Unfortunately, I agree with Victor. If only Reed wasn't such a wimp and if Obama wasn't so professorial, the public option would be a slam dunk. Without a public option, I think that any health care reform bill will be inadequate.

  3. I am disgusted with the Democratic leadership (or should I say lack of leadership) in the Senate. I would never vote for a Republican; however, it a progressive independent were to run, I would support him or her.

  4. Thank you all for your comments. I recently heard one commentator on one of the talk shows say that the Republican party is no longer a real party. It has been reduced to an ideology. However, he went on to say that there are still two parties - the conservative wing of the Democratic party and the progressive wing of the Democratic party. Do you think this is true? (I wish I could remember who said this.)

  5. The House needs to stick to its guns and not vote for any bill that does not include a public option. Polls say over 70% of the public wants a public option. So what's the big deal! If the Senate can't compromise to include a public option, we need to go shopping for new Senators in 2010 and 2012. Lobbyists and insurance companies can support these Senators with money, but we still have the vote. We have the voice. We have the power. Lets use it!

  6. I pretty much agree with the comments above, but allow me to change the subject. I am disappointed in our President in that he went to New Orleans and then went to a fund raiser in California. Haven't we seen this before? What was his staff thinking?

  7. NDC Blog, I heard the same theory about the Democratic party being the only party but having two wings. Senator Spector's recent change from being a Republican to being a Democrat is evidence of this. However, it troubles me that the Democratic party now has in it Republicans in sheep's clothing.

  8. Anonymous, Patrick, Victor, Janice and Carol:

Thank you for your contining support for this fledgling blog. I enjoy reading all of your comments.

A note to Victor: I tend to think that in Northville, we have just the opposite situation. Republicans who are really Democrats but who run as Republicans to get elected, at least at the city and township level.
