TV Westerns

Many of us were kids in the 50's and 60's when westerns were king on TV. So in what is admittedly a departure from politics (and reality shows), let's hear about your favorite westerns from Gunsmoke to Bonanza. Personally, I liked Steve McQueen as the bounty hunter in Wanted Dead or Alive.

  3. Sorry to say, but even the old western make significant contribution to understanding American society and the politics of the time period in which they were filmed. Take for example High Noon. In this early 50's film, the sheriff is forced to face the bad guys at high noon alone. His townspeople all know that they should stand for what is right and support the sheriff, but they are cowards. The film is a metaphor for the McCarthy era. Many fine people knew that they should have said something/done something to stop the Red Scare madness, but they stood back silently, while good people were ruined by the Scare.

  4. Jim and Susan: It's hard to beat the Lone Ranger. I still have my Lone Ranger decoder ring. Does anyone remember the Cisco Kid or Hoppalong Cassidy? Do you remember the names of their horses? A true trivial pursuit challenge.

Scott: I would like to hear your political take on Shane. Good will win in the end but at a price?

  5. Never been a big fan of Westerns with the exception of Bonanza. I did enjoy the movie Tin Men that has lots of Bonanza jokes in it.
