Do You Agree with Frank Rich Re: Afghanistan?

Frank Rich of the NY Times said in today’s opinion column that “The gaping discrepancy between Emanuel’s upbeat assessment and the reality on the ground went unremarked because absolutely no one was paying attention. Everyone is now. That, at least, gives us reason to hope that the president’s first bold move to extricate America from the graveyard of empires won’t be his last.” Do you agree?

  1. I wonder what is going on in Iraq? Do we have a Democratically elected goverment in the Arab world that works and is an ally? Can we do the same in Afghanistan? Most experts say no because it is a country of independent tribes and most of those in control like it that way.

  2. Vice-President Biden was right. We should pull out of Afghanistan and hunt Al Queda and the the Taliban with Predator drones. Then spend the tax dollars on out crumbling infra-structure.

  3. We have the most advanced military in the world. The Taliban have no air power and no tanks and yet they hold their own against us. Didn't we learn anything from Viet Nam. Superior firepower means nothing in a guerrilla war where the populace is on the side of the Taliban and the government is corrupt. Just like Viet Nam. We learned nothing from Viet Nam.

  4. But Patrick, we are NOT using our "advanced military" and our "superior firepower". Our Commander-in-Chief has ordered our troops to not fight if there is a risk that we would sustain losses. For example, troops are given instructions to "Patrol only in areas that you are reasonably certain that you will not have to defend yourselves with lethal force." How silly is this? It's like telling the Detroit Police to not go into areas that are dangerous.

This only proves what we all have known all along. Our President is in Afghanistan because he made the argument that Bush was fighting the wrong war and now he is fighting the right war. He is playing politics with our soldiers. The reality is that he does not believe in any war or in the use of our vast power against our enemies. I am not certain he even believes that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are our enemies. So what we have is a President who is fighting a war he does not believe. Simultaneously, he is following the same EXACT plan to finish a war that Bush started that he was opposed to. It's disgraceful.

  5. So Ananymous, what is your plan for handling this? Do we withdraw and allow the Taliban and Al Queda to take over the country again? Do we reinstitute the draft and send in thousands more of American troops? Do shoot to kill anything that moves? What is disgraceful is your criticism of Obama with no plan to resolve this Bush/Cheney created mess.

  9. Thanks for your post. I will definitely be using these ideas and pondering more and more about what I am really doing right with the use of my YouTube video channel dedicated to some of the concerns you have mentioned. I'm also considering the actual way it would be if I launched a blog discussing a number of the same issues you've dealt with here. Thank you for showing me something so obvious. I used to be blinded from it. Your post has really made an impact on the way I think about my own work and ideas too. click here to know more about clipping path.
